Yesterday was the first time I got gas since I've been back in the States. Our 2003 Jetta was pretty much empty, so it cost $53.

Fifty-three dollars! To fill the Jetta!

Gas here in Maine is $4.09 per gallon, and my little car needed 13 of them.

(For those of you overseas, a gallon is 0.833 of an imperial gallon or 3.785 liters, and a dollar is slightly less than a Mexican Peso or the Ruble immediately following the Soviet collapse).

Dang, I swear when I got the car it was only $20 to fill it.

But that was five whole years ago, I guess, which apparently was a key five years in the energy sector ...

We love the Prius with our 48 miles to the gallon, but we need it dude -- out here in LA, gas two weeks ago was $4.69 ... at ARCO ...

(It's happily come down a little since then.)

We slipped under $4 here in Maine this week, which was really exciting until we all collectively realized that we're still paying $3.91 per gallon of gas!!
