palm deira logoThe other day I showed an artist rendering of the new Universe islands that also included the as-to-yet unconstructed Palm Deira complex (see The World is Not Enough).

The Palm Deira (named after the section of town it's near - Deira) will be the third palm island for Dubai - the Palm Jumeirah is open now, the Palm Jebel Ali will be ready for building construction later this year - but the Palm Deira won't be ready until 2015 or as late as 2020. But when it's open it's going to be huge - 7.5 miles tall by 4.5 miles wide, about ten times larger than the Palm Jumeirah.

Anyway, I found some crazy photos online to share. (Click on this first one for a bigger image.)

The ones of the villas are very James Bondian, eh?

The thing I find interesting about those, and other building photos from Dubai, is that they seem to all have that futuristic Utopian feel to them.

Everything is very beautiful, yet still symmetrically laid out and highly designed. I must applaud them though for breaking new ground like this, can you imagine the hurdles developers in the states would have to go though to make islands and populate them?

I'm not sure if environmental groups in the States would let you dredge up the ocean, really.

But yes, lots of futuristic Utopian feel here.

Those artist renditions are similar to what they put out for the Jumeirah Palm about 5 years ago - and look what was actually built. You can look over the fence and see what your neighbour is eating for breakfast!
