Orbit News LogoWe get this channel on our satellite cable called Orbit News that shows a whole host of news programs from the States. Things like NBC Nightly News, ABC World News, the PBS NewsHour, Dateline NBC, Today Show, Meet the Press, Keith Olbermann, etc.

Anyway, the other night they were playing Hardball about the whole Hillary Clinton campaign office hostage crisis in New Hampshire. And who did they turn to for the reporter on the street?

None other than Pat Callaghan from Portland, Maine's WCSH!

Pat Callaghan

For those of you who don't live in Southern Maine, Callaghan is the co-anchor of WCSH's news, and just ... I don't know, The Man when it comes to local news.

I don't know what it is, he just seems like a nice guy. I am biased in thinking that everything's just more friendly in Maine?

Either way Callaghan doesn't fall into any of the local newscaster cliches - he's not pompous like Ted Baxter or stuffy like Jim Dial or as sensational as Kent Brockman or heck, or even as unlucky as the Muppet newscaster.

It was good to see him, even if Chris Matthews has the propensity to talk over everyone on his show. Lord, at points it seems like Hardball is only a half step away from devolving into The View.

Anyway, and I should also mention that although WCSH is the best station in the area, for weather I personally prefer WGME's Max Riseman because well, we were in Boy Scouts together. Hey man, you wear the same color neckerchief as another dude and that bonds you for life.

Conan used this stock picture of our friend Pat Callahan on his show last year. Something to the effect of "your generic Staples store manager". I'm sure it's on YouTube somewhere...

(I agree that WCSH is the best of the three. I don't believe 'news' on the other stations. I even like their weather team... Go Mannix!!)
